Things are going beautifully at our little homestead in the city. Little Lotus and I are finding our balance after the challenges we faced over the last few weeks, and blessings are beginning to emerge from the hurdles we have experienced. As we find ways to take care of ourselves and each other, our little yellow house that needs so much work has turned into our sanctuary.
The backyard of our small shotgun house is one of our favorite places to hang out. When we began working on our little house, our backyard had a path worn through it from the continuous foot traffic that used our yard as a shortcut to the nearest corner store. Slowly and steadily, our backyard has become an outdoor refuge in which we can read, chat, play, and soak up the sun.
A milestone for us was when we purchased our first wind chime to christen our yard as a peaceful, creative space. Little Lotus and I had taken a walk to a store a couple of blocks away from our house, and we happened by their small display of wind chimes. We picked one out, paid for our purchase, and walked home to choose the perfect home for our little hummingbird chime. We hung it from a branch of a tree in our yard where it was sure to receive ample breeze.
When I’m lazing in our backyard, as I often do these days, and I hear the ring of our first wind chime, I am reminded to take things light and breezy and to keep my spirit free like a hummingbird. The pleasure and peace that I receive from our little fixerupper house and a small windchime that cost only a few dollars reminds me that true wealth has nothing to do with money, and it has everything to do with a rich spirit and making the most of what we have.
